The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is one of the world’s largest educational robotics competitions, and has been running successfully since 1992. The competition is designed to motivate students from ages 14-18 to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through a project-based learning challenge. The 2018 season had 3,647 teams with more than 91,000 students and 25,000 mentors from 27 countries. UTAS Robotics is currently Tasmania’s only FRC team.

UTAS Robotics is comprised of students from Southern Tasmania and is mentored by University staff, undergraduate students, professionals from industry, and former student participants. This will be the fifth time that we have participated in the competition. Last year we placed 13th out of the 30 teams that participated in our regional event. This year we’re aiming to finish in the top eight.

The FRC build season starts during our summer holidays, following the reveal of this year’s robot game on the first weekend in January. We then have six weeks to build a robot that we will take to our closest regional event in Sydney, March 2019. In the lead up to the build season, we run a weekly robotics club on Fridays from 4pm to 6pm.

Applications for new members and mentors to join our team will open shortly.

If you’re interested in joining the team or finding out more, but are unable to attend the information session, please contact us directly.
